ABSTRACT
Using systematic review of observational and interventional studies, it was concluded that patients treated with vitamin K antagonists are in need to adjust their dietary intake of vitamin K during their anticoagulant therapy.Vitamin K is an essential cofactor for the post-translational carboxylation of various proteins involved in blood coagulation. For many years, patients treated with vitamin K antagonistshave been advised to reduce dietary vitamin K content to avoid food and drug interaction which might influence anticoagulation stability. Many patients on warfarin are vitamin K depleted as a result of routine instructions to restrict vitamin K intake as an attempt to achieve optimal therapeutic response. The objective of thiseditorial is to address the influence of thevitamin K rich foods on vitamin K antagonists.
